One Week of Rain Ahead: What to Expect During the Ongoing Wet Spell

Current weather in Bangladesh is quite stormy and it’s expected to stay rough for about a week. Officials from the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) say that thunderstorms and heavy rain will continue until May 4 or 5.

What’s different this year? The early summer has seen more storms, thanks to strong weather systems from the Mediterranean that travel through India. These low-pressure systems force warm, moist air from the Bay of Bengal to rise, resulting in thunderstorms.

So far, Nikli in Kishoreganj recorded the highest rainfall—160 millimeters—in just 24 hours. Other areas like Mymensingh, Cumilla, and Chattogram saw rain between 100mm and 150mm, while some areas in Rajshahi and Khulna stayed dry.

Today, light to moderate showers are predicted across Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions. The BMD advises people to stay indoors during storms to avoid lightning strikes. Cautionary Signal Number 3 is in place at major ports like Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar, urging fishing boats to stay near the shore.

Staying safe is key. Weather experts suggest keeping an eye on updates and being ready for sudden changes. This season, it’s crucial to be prepared since rough weather can catch anyone off guard.

According to a recent national survey by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics, more than 50% of residents feel increasingly unprepared for extreme weather. This is concerning, especially as climate patterns shift globally. Understanding the weather’s unpredictability can help families better plan for stormy seasons in the future.
