Brisbane has been chosen as one of only 300 cities globally to receive funding from Bloomberg Philanthropies through the Youth Climate Action Fund.
This exciting initiative offers Brisbane residents aged 15 to 24 the chance to obtain grants up to $7,000 (or $5,000 USD) for sustainability research projects.
Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner expressed pride in Brisbane’s selection, highlighting that the program supports practical, youth-driven ideas to tackle climate change and improve lifestyles in the city. He recently participated in the Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative with representatives from 45 cities, discussing ways to secure more opportunities like this for the community.
The Mayor noted that young residents bring innovative solutions to local challenges, and this funding will help turn their ideas into reality. Projects may include planting trees, reducing waste, and promoting sustainable transportation. These initiatives aim to make life in Brisbane better while preparing the city for future growth.
Eligible projects for funding cover a wide range of ideas, such as:
- Climate education and awareness campaigns
- Environmental data mapping
- Heatwave response and climate resilience strategies
- Community gardens and tree planting
- Sustainable food and urban farming initiatives
- Waste reduction and recycling efforts
- Walking, cycling, and public transport programs
- Youth-led climate leadership initiatives
The goal is to empower young people, giving them the skills to create research-driven solutions that truly make a difference in Brisbane.
Interestingly, cities that achieve strong results may qualify for additional funding, allowing successful teams to expand their projects. Applications will open on July 15, encouraging young residents to explore the opportunity through the City Council’s website.
As climate initiatives gain traction worldwide, youth involvement is crucial. A recent survey found that around 70% of young people worldwide feel motivated to contribute to environmental efforts. This commitment shows that the next generation is ready to take charge and make an impact.
