First Srinagar-Jammu Vande Bharat: Soldier’s Heartwarming Journey to Family of Three

Just before 8 am, a wave of excitement rippled through the Srinagar Railway Station as officers signaled for everyone to hurry in. The moment was historic: the first Vande Bharat train connecting Srinagar to Jammu was arriving.

Inside, security checks were swift. In just six minutes, the sleek train appeared. Passengers, many boarding for the first time, eagerly lined up, ready to embark on a journey that promised to cut travel time to under five hours.

Historically, the 260-kilometer route from Srinagar to Jammu has been challenged by landslides and unpredictable weather. This train service has been long awaited, a dream for many locals.

The Srinagar-Katra line has been operational since June 2025, but travelers still faced difficulties having to switch transport an hour outside Jammu. Soldier Gagan, traveling home for his wife’s delivery, expressed relief. “This saves so much time,” he said.

As the train departed, passengers absorbed the breathtaking views of South Kashmir’s greenery and snow-capped mountains. Conversations sparked among strangers, with many marveling at the spacious seating compared to cramped airplane chairs.

For Aakash and Deepti Goyal, this train was a game-changer. They were on a family trip and had initially planned to drive. “This feels much easier,” Aakash stated as they settled in.

Security was tight, staff kept the train clean, and about half the seats were full that day. The train made several stops, including Banihal and Katra, before reaching Jammu Tawi Station at 12:45 pm.

Travelers expressed that this wasn’t just about saving time. The certainty and ease of train travel were comforting. Sajad, a Kashmiri travel agent, highlighted how he often faced unpredictable road trips. “Now I have the luxury of certainty,” he said.

Formerly, the journey could stretch to ten hours by car, often leaving passengers dusty and exhausted. Now, comfortable train travel allows for movement and rest, a significant improvement according to Himachal resident Dharmendra Singh.

In addition, the Jammu Tawi–Srinagar train service showcases impressive engineering feats, like the Anji Khad bridge, which stands at 330 meters. It’s a testament to the advancements in railway projects.

As the train rolled back to Srinagar, passengers, including government employees and students, buzzed about their experiences. The thrill of this new travel option was palpable. For many, what was once a long and tedious journey is now a pleasant escape, symbolizing progress for the region.

In recent years, convenience in travel has become a hot topic on social media, with users sharing their experiences and excitement over the new service. According to a 2022 report by Indian Railways, over 60% of passengers expressed satisfaction with the efficiency and comfort of the Vande Bharat Express.

With improved infrastructure, the journey from Jammu to Srinagar is not just a trip anymore but an experience filled with scenic beauty and modern comforts—a leap forward in making travel safer and more enjoyable in this vibrant region.
