Late this afternoon, guests at Big Thunder Mountain Railroad in Magic Kingdom had to be evacuated. This happened on the ride’s reopening day after a 16-month refurbishment.
Around 6:00 PM, videos shared on X showed a cast member using a fire extinguisher near the attraction’s loading area. Another video captured guests leaving the queue as the situation unfolded.
The attraction closed in January 2025 for significant updates, including new track, refreshed animatronics, and a new Rainbow Caverns scene. It was eagerly awaited by fans, especially with a lower height requirement of 38 inches now in place.
While some initial reports suggested a fire, details are still unclear. It’s possible that the cast member was responding to smoke or another concern. The ride is currently listed as temporarily closed on the My Disney Experience app.
Disney World is being contacted for more information. Incidents like this remind us how quickly things can change in a theme park. Safety is always the top priority, and it’s standard for attractions to halt operations in such situations.
Interestingly, safety incidents in amusement parks are often met with mixed reactions on social media, with users expressing both concern and the propensity to share their experiences. This creates a conversation around park safety and guest experiences.
As guests await the return of Big Thunder Mountain, the excitement built up during the ride’s refurbishment might just make its reopening even more special.
