In Jonesboro, Arkansas, the Food Bank of Northeast Arkansas is gearing up for its annual “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive. This event, supported by the National Association of Letter Carriers and the U.S. Postal Service, will take place on Saturday, May 9.
On this day, letter carriers will collect nonperishable food items from residents. To participate, simply fill the blue bag provided with sealed, in-date food before your mail is delivered. Your letter carrier will pick up the donations and take them to the Food Bank to help those in need.
Items most needed include canned meats, peanut butter, canned fruits and vegetables, soups, pasta, cereal, and boxed meals. Please avoid donating food in glass containers for safety reasons.
Elizabeth Johnson, donor engagement coordinator at the Food Bank, encourages everyone to check their pantry, fill a bag, and leave it by their mailbox. She emphasizes the importance of community participation, stating, “It’s one day, one bag, and a simple way to help ensure no one in our community goes hungry.”
The demand for food assistance has grown. According to a recent report from Feeding America, about 34 million people face hunger in the U.S., including more than 9 million children. Local food drives play a crucial role in addressing this hunger crisis.
