Wayne June was the unmistakable voice of Darkest Dungeon. His deep, sorrowful tone added weight to every moment in Red Hook Studios’ dark world. When June passed away in January 2025, fans mourned not just his loss as an actor but the unique energy he brought to the game.
Director Chris Bourassa shared that in one of his final emails, June had given his permission to explore AI recreations of his voice. This came as a surprise since June had previously opposed such technology. “I think he was trying to put the game/team/fans first—offering us a ‘way forward’,” Bourassa explained in a thread on the Darkest Dungeon subreddit. Ultimately, the decision was made to honor June’s legacy without using AI, and Red Hook chose to support his family instead.
This decision stands in contrast to other games. For example, Cyberpunk 2077 used AI to recreate the voice of an actor who had passed away, leading to mixed reactions. “Do not f**ing do that,” remarked Elias Toufexis, known for his work in Deus Ex, when a modder attempted to swap his voice into Cyberpunk 2077. Even Epic Games tapped into AI to bring back James Earl Jones in Fortnite*. However, Bourassa believes that imitating June’s voice would dilute the power of his performances. “I would never, ever erode his incredible and timeless performances by teaching a machine to sound like him,” he said.
June’s voice brought a unique texture to Darkest Dungeon 2, a game known for its roguelike structure and deep storytelling. His baritone resonated with fans, elevating the game’s ambiance. “His love of his craft was an inspiration,” Bourassa said in remembrance. His work has left a lasting impact on the gaming industry, shaping how we appreciate voice acting.
In recent discussions, many fans have taken to social media to express their feelings about the use of AI in recreating voices. There’s an ongoing debate about preserving the essence of actors while embracing new technology. As the gaming landscape continues to evolve, the ethics of using AI remains a pressing issue.
Wayne June’s legacy is etched in our memories—proof that the human touch in storytelling is irreplaceable.
