At Virginia Commonwealth University’s commencement today, Rick Wagoner, former CEO of General Motors, inspired graduates with words about our rapidly changing world. He pointed out the unique challenges and exciting opportunities ahead.
Wagoner noted that VCU graduates – more than 5,100 in total – have an edge. “You didn’t just get an education; you gained real-world awareness and resilience,” he said. He compared their experiences at VCU to the unpredictability of the world outside: always busy and often changing.
This ceremony took place at the Greater Richmond Convention Center. Among the graduates, about 3,300 earned undergraduate degrees, while others received master’s, professional, and doctoral degrees. The students hailed from 35 states and 41 countries, showcasing VCU’s diverse community.
President Michael Rao, Ph.D., added that VCU graduates possess a “unique brand of critical thinking.” He emphasized the importance of independence, stating that graduates have learned to tackle complex problems not as burdens but as chances to innovate.
Both Kathy and Rick Wagoner received the Edward A. Wayne Medal for their ongoing support of VCU, including leadership roles in two major fundraising campaigns — Make It Real Campaign and the current Unlocking Potential. Their commitment also includes the Wagoner Family Endowed Scholarship in the School of Business. Rick served on the VCU Board of Visitors for two terms, further demonstrating their dedication to the university.
Among the graduates, Sameen Hossain, a rising junior majoring in bioinformatics, received the Board of Visitors Award, which honors outstanding students who embody VCU’s spirit. This award comes with a scholarship that equalizes in-state tuition.
As the world evolves, educators and alumni alike agree that adaptability and critical thinking are key. In fact, research shows that employers value these traits more than ever, with a recent survey indicating that 92% of employers view problem-solving skills as essential in their hires. This reality reinforces Wagoner’s message: VCU graduates are well-equipped to face the future head-on.
