KALISPELL — Chef Stephen Kina is taking his unique barbecue style to a national stage on the new Food Network show Chopped Castaways. Hailing from Kalispell, Montana, Kina has deep roots in Hawaii. It was only after moving to the mainland for college that he discovered his passion for barbecue.

“I had never really tasted brisket until then, and it changed everything for me,” Kina shared. Since moving to Montana in 2020, he has been crafting his barbecue, blending his Hawaiian heritage into his dishes. Despite having little experience, he launched his own food truck to fill the barbecue gap he noticed in Montana.

With a growing following of 60,000 on Instagram, including an invitation to cater at the prestigious Kentucky Derby, Kina is making waves. “Catering there was special — being the only Montana business at the event meant a lot,” he said.

On Chopped Castaways, he competes against 11 other chefs in a raw environment with limited tools, using only an open fire to cook. This setting is right up Kina’s alley. “My business relies on an open fire — I don’t use propane or electricity. Coming from an island, this challenge feels natural,” he explained.

For Kina, this show isn’t just about competition; it’s a chance to showcase both Hawaii and Montana. “The cultures are so similar — both are friendly and family-oriented. I’m proud to represent both states,” he said.

While participating in the show, Kina reflects on how far he has come. From his first bite of brisket to competing on national television, he embodies the spirit of perseverance. Chopped Castaways premiered on May 12 on Food Network, igniting excitement among his fans and food lovers alike.
