At just 17, Antonio Wallace made waves in the bodybuilding world during his first competition at the Jamaica Bodybuilding and Fitness Association (JABBFA) Novice and Junior Championships on April 25. As the youngest competitor, he took the stage at the Courtleigh Auditorium in Portmore, facing off against older, seasoned athletes.
Despite entering the competition with no formal coaching, Antonio secured second place in the Men’s Physique Juniors and fifth in the Men’s Physique Most Muscular categories. Many first-timers view just stepping on stage as a victory, but Antonio approached it with a champion’s spirit.
“I had no training coach,” he shared. “But I had a posing session with Stacy-Ann Spence. I believed in myself and hoped for the best.” His attitude shone through, proving that confidence can shine even in challenging situations.
Antonio’s journey into bodybuilding was unexpected. It began with a challenge from his father: commit to push-ups and sit-ups for a few months, and he’d get a Nintendo Switch. What started as a playful incentive quickly became a passion for self-improvement.
“Gradually, it became about me and my future,” he reflected. Many teens choose to spend their weekends socializing, but Antonio dedicated himself to discipline and a solid workout routine. He’s been training for six years and is proud to coach himself along the way.
The hardest part of preparing for the competition was mastering the art of posing. “Posing can be tricky,” he admitted. “Stacy-Ann helped me showcase my physique the right way. In men’s physique, you need to hit specific muscle groups.”
Before going on stage, Antonio found strength in his faith. “Any doubts I had, I gave to the Lord,” he said. “This is my moment to show who I am.” His calmness and determination resulted in an impressive debut that was well-received.
Support came from his mother, Sherene McPherson Chin, who has been there through it all. “I’ve watched him grow in his training,” she said. “He’s never had a trainer, and I’m proud of his discipline and effort.” She praised his performance, saying, “He did his best, and I couldn’t be prouder.”
Looking ahead, Antonio has set his sights on continuing his bodybuilding journey, powerlifting, and even martial arts. He recognizes the financial burden of gym fees, supplements, and competitions, and is hopeful for future sponsorships to support his ambitions.
As more teens are drawn to fitness and bodybuilding, Antonio represents a new generation of determined athletes. His story reminds us that with discipline and a positive mindset, anyone can achieve their goals.
