Bharat Dynamics Unveils ₹500 Crore Naval Systems Facility in Andhra Pradesh: A Game-Changer for Defense Manufacturing

Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), a state-run defence manufacturer, is set to enhance India’s defence capabilities. On May 15, 2026, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated a new Naval Systems Manufacturing Facility in Anakapalli, Andhra Pradesh.

This facility, spanning 160 acres and costing ₹500 crore, aims to strengthen India’s naval defence, especially in underwater warfare. With the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative at its core, the project focuses on self-reliance in defence production.

The facility will produce advanced underwater weapons for the Indian Navy, like heavyweight and lightweight torpedoes, and naval countermeasures. BDL plans to incorporate state-of-the-art technology, including acoustic testing tanks and specialized evaluation facilities for underwater systems.

This initiative is crucial in reducing dependency on foreign imports for naval capabilities. It aligns with India’s broader commitment to enhance domestic defence production and maritime security. According to a recent report, the Indian defence sector is projected to grow significantly, with an estimated increase in domestic production from 60% to 75% by 2025.

The project isn’t just about military readiness; it also promises to boost the local economy. Once operational, it’s expected to create around 3,000 jobs, both directly and indirectly. This growth will likely benefit local small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and strengthen supply chains in the region, transforming Anakapalli into a key defence manufacturing hub in southern India.

As the world becomes increasingly competitive in defence technology, this facility represents a significant step for India. Experts suggest that robust domestic manufacturing can enhance national security and foster innovation. The investment in such facilities can stimulate local economies while also ensuring that India’s defence needs are met efficiently.
