A member of the Chicago Fire Department passed away during a training exercise on the North Side. The incident, which occurred in the 6600 block of North Kedzie Avenue, involved routine hose testing that all firefighters must complete every six months.
The fallen firefighter was identified as 61-year-old Steven Decker, who had dedicated 30 years to the CFD. He was taken to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston but sadly did not survive. Erik Steinmetz, president of Chicago Firefighters – Local 2, explained that the training can be physically demanding, as it requires rolling and unrolling hoses and ensuring they are completely emptied of water.
Decker was well-respected among his peers and was known for his extensive knowledge of the equipment. Colleagues honored his memory in a touching procession as his body was escorted to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.
In recent years, training-related incidents in emergency services have raised concerns. According to a 2021 report by the National Fire Protection Association, training accidents contribute significantly to injuries and fatalities among firefighters. The dangerous nature of their work is compounded by the physical demands of training and the emotional toll of their duties.
