Xabi Alonso, the renowned Spanish soccer star, is set to become the new manager of Chelsea FC in the Premier League. This news was first reported by David Ornstein from The Athletic, confirming that Alonso has signed a four-year contract with the club after a recent meeting in London.
Alonso steps in to replace interim manager Calum McFarlane, who took charge briefly after Liam Rosenior was let go in April. During the hiring process, Alonso was Chelsea’s number one choice, and it seems he was eager to join Stamford Bridge.
The former midfielder had a remarkable playing career from 1999 to 2017. He played for clubs like Real Sociedad, Liverpool, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich. He also made 114 appearances for Spain and was part of the team that won the FIFA World Cup in 2010.
In 2019, Alonso began his coaching journey with Real Sociedad’s B team. His success there led him to become Bayer Leverkusen’s head coach in 2022, where he secured a Bundesliga title and a DFB-Pokal.
However, his time at Real Madrid was brief. He parted ways with the club in January, just eight months after his appointment, as Real Madrid struggled to keep pace with rivals like Barcelona, who recently clinched the La Liga title.
On taking over Chelsea, Alonso faces the challenge of reviving a club that was once a powerhouse but has faced difficulties lately. Chelsea has won six Premier League titles and two UEFA Champions League titles, but they haven’t lifted the domestic league trophy since 2017 and last won the Champions League in 2021.
This season, Chelsea sits mid-table, standing ninth in the league. This comes after underwhelming finishes in previous years; they were 12th last season and have dropped from fourth to sixth.
With Alonso at the helm, Chelsea fans hope for a revival. Can he restore the club to its glory days? Only time will tell.
