On Thursday, John Beccia, a congressional candidate, held a roundtable discussion in Lynn with 12 local advocates and community leaders. The focus? Tackling food insecurity in Massachusetts’ 6th Congressional District. This meeting was part of Beccia’s “People Over Politics” tour, which aims to connect with residents and experts about the real challenges working families face.
During the conversation, participants highlighted the urgent need for hunger relief and accessible food, especially given recent federal cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Many families are struggling to get the help they qualify for due to complex bureaucratic barriers.
Beccia pointed out, “Food insecurity is at an all-time high, yet the government is cutting SNAP benefits. Our food pantries can’t bear this burden alone.” He expressed his commitment to advocating for real change if elected.
Nate Berkowitz, director of a nonprofit in Salem, shared insights on the importance of storytelling. He emphasized that the faces behind food pantry lines are often surprising—working families, seniors, and veterans who never thought they’d need assistance. “We need to share these stories,” he said. “Without them, federal cuts will continue, and local organizations will struggle even more.”
Now more than ever, understanding the impact of food insecurity is critical. Recent data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture shows that as of 2022, about 10% of American households experienced food insecurity, a number that has been steadily rising since the pandemic. Advocates like Beccia and Berkowitz believe that more awareness and action can lead to meaningful improvements for those affected.
