Ukraine has ramped up its drone attacks recently, hitting targets in the Moscow region over the weekend. This marked one of their most significant assaults on the capital since the conflict escalated.
The General Staff of Ukraine’s Armed Forces reported that three types of locally developed drones were used in the attack: the FP-1 Firepoint, RS-1 Bars, and a new model called the Bars-SM Gladiator. These drones targeted vital Russian military locations, particularly a microchip facility and an oil pumping station near Moscow.
According to the local mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, more than 120 drones were deployed, making it a historic event for drone activity in the area. The attacks resulted in casualties, with at least four deaths reported, including three in Moscow.
Ukraine’s approach reflects a growing confidence in their drone capabilities. These drones are relatively affordable yet effective weapons, allowing strikes deep within Russian territory. The FP-1 Firepoint, for example, can fly over 900 miles and carry significant payloads. The cost to produce each drone is about $50,000, with production rates at around 200 per day, according to the BBC. Analysts suggest that Ukraine aims to exploit reported weaknesses in Russia’s air defense systems.
Despite the heavy defenses in Moscow, including both S-300 and S-400 missile systems, Ukraine appears determined to penetrate these layers. **”The concentration of Russian air defense in the Moscow region is the largest. But we are overcoming it,”** said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

While Russia claims to have intercepted over 1,000 Ukrainian drones, ongoing drone production and military strategy from Ukraine indicate they will continue to press their advantage in this aerial conflict. With both sides ramping up their operations, the conflict shows no signs of slowing down.
