RALEIGH, NC – The Hurricanes are heading to the Eastern Conference Final for the third time in four years. It’s a familiar place for them, but their path this season has been unique.
Head coach Rod Brind’Amour shared, “It was a challenge to stay sharp while having so much time off. Playoffs can be a mental drain.” His leadership has helped the Hurricanes reach the playoffs every season since he became head coach, but this year’s journey is one for the books. No modern team had swept two seven-game series at the start of the playoffs, and no team since the 1919 Montreal Canadiens has had an eleven-day break between series.
Center Sebastian Aho noted, “We’ve been doing all the right things,” saying they managed to keep physically fit while taking a mental break early on, before ramping back up their intensity.
After sweeping Ottawa in the first round, the break didn’t hinder their performance against Philadelphia. Carolina dominated Game 1, shutting out the Flyers 3-0.
This next round promises a tougher challenge. The Canadiens finished strong this season, tying for third in the Atlantic Division with 106 points. They boast star forward Cole Caufield, who scored 51 goals during the regular season, second in the NHL. Their captain, Nick Suzuki, is a skilled player who excels in many situations.
Hurricanes captain Jordan Staal praised Suzuki: “He plays in all scenarios—penalty kill, power play. He’s very smart on the ice.”
With the Canadiens posing the strongest offensive threat Carolina has faced this postseason, goaltender Frederik Andersen’s performance will be crucial. Leading the NHL in goals against average and save percentage, Andersen remains confident in his preparation between series. He emphasized the need to focus during practice: “We work hard to stay sharp for game time.”
Interestingly, Carolina has avoided facing the Florida Panthers, who eliminated them in previous Eastern Conference Finals. The team has also benefited from new players like Nikolaj Ehlers and K’Andre Miller, who have added depth to both offense and defense.
General manager Eric Tulsky remarked on the team’s improvements: “While mid-season trades get the spotlight, the offseason changes often make a big difference. We’ve really strengthened our team this year.”
Ultimately, it’s the Hurricanes’ experience that may set them apart in their quest for the Stanley Cup. Andersen reflected, “We’ve experienced ups and downs during these playoffs. We’ve handled challenges maturely, and we’re excited for another shot.”
