The Rivers State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Peters Nwagor, recently emphasized the urgent need for change in how we develop our cities and respond to climate challenges. Speaking at an international conference hosted by Rivers State University, he highlighted the connection between our built environments and climate change, especially in developing countries.
Dr. Nwagor praised the event, noting its focus on essential issues, like how we can build smarter cities while addressing climate change. He pointed out that poor planning and weak regulations are major obstacles in these regions. Sadly, the impacts of climate change are increasingly severe, especially in the Niger Delta, where we’ve seen more frequent flooding and erosion.
He stated, “The built environment is both a contributor to and a casualty of the climate crisis.” This means our buildings and cities often worsen climate issues while also suffering from them. He stressed that we can’t keep designing our spaces as if the climate hasn’t changed.
Research and education play a crucial role in finding solutions. Dr. Nwagor advocated for updating university programs to produce graduates who understand climate science and digital technology. He believes students must be ready for today’s job market while being environmentally aware.
The Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Isaac Zeb-Obipi, also spoke at the conference. He termed climate change a global reality with harmful effects on our environment. Both leaders agree that a collective effort is necessary to promote climate-responsive development.
According to recent data, almost 50% of cities in developing countries are not prepared for the effects of climate change. The urgent need for modern technology and planning is more crucial than ever. As cities continue to expand, a recent survey found that 70% of urban planners believe climate responsiveness should be a top priority in urban design.
Overall, Dr. Nwagor’s statements reflect a growing awareness about climate change’s impact on our infrastructure and our lives. It’s clear that thoughtful action is essential for a sustainable future.
