Can Baby Yoda, also known as Grogu, win the hearts of fans once more? That’s the big question as Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu hits theaters this Memorial Day weekend. This film continues the story from Jon Favreau’s beloved series, which helped launch Disney+ right before the pandemic changed everything.
This movie is under a lot of scrutiny. It’s the first Star Wars film in theaters in seven years due to various delays, including the pandemic and labor strikes. It’s a pivotal moment for the franchise.
Box office predictions show Mandalorian and Grogu could earn between $82 million and $100 million in the U.S. alone over the four-day weekend. While that sounds promising, it could still be considered lower than other Star Wars releases since Disney bought Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion in 2012. Globally, insiders expect it to pull in at least $160 million, although it’s not releasing in South Korea.
Social media trends suggest the family-friendly angle gives this film an edge. “Word-of-mouth is essential nowadays,” says a Hollywood financier. “Families are key to its success. If they show up, it could surpass our expectations.” Historically, the Memorial Day weekend has drawn casual moviegoers, and Star Wars films often benefit from spontaneous movie trips.
For a comparison, back in 2018, Solo: A Star Wars Story opened to $104 million, but it struggled afterwards, finishing at $393 million globally. In contrast, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker released a year later and raked in over $1 billion despite receiving mixed reviews.
Interestingly, audience reactions can differ from critics. Rise of Skywalker had a poor critic score of 51% on Rotten Tomatoes but boasted an impressive 86% audience score. Meanwhile, Mandalorian currently holds a 60% critic rating, teetering close to “rotten” status.
Disney anticipates that the movie’s performance is just one part of the bigger picture. The original series featuring Grogu became a cultural phenomenon, selling over 13 million pieces of merchandise. It ranks as the most-watched show on Disney+, with over 1 billion hours streamed.
In the film, we see Pedro Pascal reprise his role as the Mandalorian, a protector of Grogu. Sigourney Weaver voices a character who gives the Mandalorian a new mission: rescue Rotta the Hutt, voiced by Jeremy Allen White.
Critics note, “It’s not easy to fall in love with it like fans did with the original trilogy.” However, they acknowledge that the charm of Pascal and Grogu adds a lot to the experience.
Looking ahead, Star Wars: Starfighter, starring Ryan Gosling and directed by Shawn Levy, is set to release next year, which may further shape the franchise’s future.
