Marion VA Celebrates Community and Wellness at Annual VA2K Event
MARION, Ill. – The Marion VA recently held its 16th annual VA2K and Health Fair, turning wellness into a community celebration. This event aimed at promoting health and wellness while supporting veterans who are homeless or struggling.
More than just a walk, the VA2K fosters a spirit of unity among veterans. Participants come together to help those in need. William Hall, a veteran and participant, emphasized this shared responsibility, saying, “We all need to help each other, especially those who are homeless.”
For Hall, this was his third year joining the event. He finds that it not only allows him to give back but also aids him in his personal health journey. It’s a chance to build endurance and strength while doing good.
Sieger Giroux, the Whole Health Coordinator at the Marion VA, highlighted the event’s broader focus. “Health isn’t just about physical fitness,” Giroux noted. “It encompasses our relationships and overall existence. By assisting veterans in need, we promote both activity and community support.”
A major highlight of the event was the “Stuff the Bus” donation drive. Attendees brought food, clothing, and essential items for those in need. Chandra Murdoch from the VA expressed gratitude for the contributions, stating that the drive significantly helps fill critical gaps in support. Last year, the bus was half-full, but this year, they aimed to fill it completely.
Murdoch also shared that around 250 veterans benefit from these donations each month. They provide vital items like food and hygiene products through local pantries.
Each year, the VA2K event raises between $4,000 and $5,000, showcasing the community’s dedication to supporting veterans. Events like this not only foster health awareness but also strengthen the bonds within the veteran community.
Recent surveys indicate a growing recognition of the need for comprehensive support systems for veterans. According to a 2022 study by the National Alliance to End Homelessness, veteran homelessness has declined, but there’s still a long way to go. Communities that come together, like Marion, play a crucial role in this effort.
