Nishesh Basavareddy made quite a splash in his first French Open match, knocking out ninth-ranked Taylor Fritz. Ranked 148th, Basavareddy won in a thrilling four-set match that included three tiebreaks. The final scores were 7-6 (7), 7-6 (7), 6-7 (11), and 6-1.
At just 21, Basavareddy’s victory is a significant achievement. He is a former Stanford player and earned his spot in the tournament by winning the USTA Roland Garros Wild Card Challenge earlier in May. This win marks the first time an American has beaten a top-10 opponent at Roland Garros since 2000.
Fritz, who had been struggling with knee tendinitis, faced challenges throughout the match. He hadn’t played a lot recently, and it showed. After losing the first two sets in close tiebreaks, he managed to win the third set but couldn’t maintain his momentum. Basavareddy dominated the fourth set, racing to a 5-0 lead before finishing the match.
After the match, Basavareddy shared his joy: “Taylor’s obviously a great player, so I’m super happy to get through that, especially after losing the third set.”
This match reflects a growing trend in tennis where newer players are upsetting established stars. According to recent data from the ATP, younger players are gaining ground, with nearly 40% of the first-round matches at the 2026 French Open featuring players aged 23 and under.
Basavareddy’s next challenge will be against the winner of the match between Alex Michelsen and Alexander Shevchenko, adding more excitement to his tournament journey. As the competition heats up, all eyes will be on how Basavareddy can build on this remarkable victory.
