The East Texas Food Bank is launching its free Summer Food Program for children, starting with a special event in Tyler. On Tuesday, June 2, families can enjoy food and activities at the Glass Recreation Center from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. This initiative spans 43 locations across East Texas and is sponsored by the PepsiCo Foundation’s Food for Good program.
David Emerson, the CEO of the East Texas Food Bank, emphasizes the importance of this program. “It’s crucial that kids don’t go hungry just because school is closed. In East Texas, 1 in 4 children faces food insecurity. Our community needs to step up and bridge this gap,” he says.
The program provides meals at various sites like parks, churches, and libraries, Monday through Friday. Children aged 18 and under are welcome, and no registration is required.
This summer, the East Texas Food Bank aims to serve 100,000 meals to over 4,500 children. This is part of a growing trend; similar programs across the U.S. are stepping up to combat childhood hunger during the summer months. According to recent data from Feeding America, around 13 million children in the U.S. are affected by food insecurity.
To find out where meals are served, you can check the East Texas Food Bank’s website or call them directly.
