Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is already hinting at a fourth season. While the third season is set to premiere in November, production for a potential fourth season could begin as soon as early 2027.
Though season four isn’t officially confirmed, Amazon has shown great enthusiasm for continuing this journey through J.R.R. Tolkien’s Second Age.
The series has made waves globally, attracting over 185 million viewers. It’s become one of Prime Video’s top performers, with the first season enjoying the biggest launch in the platform’s history. The second season also hit records, debuting at the top of Nielsen’s Streaming Top 10 in 2024.
Season three will leap ahead a few years and explore the “height of the War of the Elves and Sauron.” It will depict Sauron’s quest to craft the One Ring, aiming to dominate Middle-earth.
If the production timeline stays on course, we might see the fourth season in 2028. Back in 2017, when Amazon acquired the rights to Tolkien’s works, they committed to producing five seasons.
Meanwhile, the film side of LOTR is buzzing too. Warner Bros. is exploring stories from Tolkien’s Third Age for potential films. The first up is The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, set for release on December 17, 2027. Andy Serkis will reprise his iconic role as Gollum, joined by Ian McKellen as Gandalf and Elijah Wood as Frodo, with Jamie Dornan stepping in as Aragorn.
Additionally, Peter Jackson recently announced a new film titled The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past, which will take place years after The Return of the King but will incorporate elements from The Fellowship of the Ring that didn’t make it into his original trilogy. Stephen Colbert is co-writing the script for this project, alongside his son and Philippa Boyens.
Jackson, in a recent chat, said he was also in talks with Tolkien’s estate about adapting more of Tolkien’s works, like The Silmarillion. He believes there’s much more of Tolkien’s writing that would translate beautifully to film.
The ongoing enthusiasm for Tolkien’s universe highlights its lasting impact and appeal. A recent survey revealed that 70% of viewers are keen to see more adaptations of Tolkien’s stories, underlining the community’s deep connection to this rich fantasy world.
With both Amazon and Warner Bros. investing heavily in new adaptations, it’s clear that the world of Middle-earth is set to grow and evolve, captivating audiences for years to come.
