Six Helpful Programs
Harris County has launched six programs at local community centers to support families:
Community Food Distribution: Partnering with Common Market, this program offers free produce boxes at community centers like Bayland and Hockley. You can reserve a box, but it’s first come, first served.
Kids Cafe: In collaboration with the Houston Food Bank, this program provides free meals and snacks for kids aged 18 and under at several centers. Families pay nothing.
Pop-Up Grocery Store: Run by Second Servings of Houston, this store at Burnett Bayland Community Center allows residents to shop for free surplus groceries, including fresh produce, sandwiches, and baked goods.
Community Fridge: Located at Freed Community Center, this fridge is stocked with donated meals from local restaurants. It’s available on a first-come, first-served basis, and staff are there to help.
La Tiendita Gulfton: Situated at Bayland Community Center, this program offers food assistance and nutrition education. Families need to make an appointment to participate.
Produce Distribution: Brighter Bites supplies seasonal produce to families at Burnett Bayland and Tracy Gee Community Centers throughout the summer.
