Cal State Monterey Bay Celebrates Juneteenth: Join Us for Local Festivities!

Juneteenth marks June 19, 1865, the day the last enslaved Americans in Texas learned they were free. It’s a day that now has federal holiday status, thanks to its rich history and significance in American culture.

For many, Juneteenth feels like another Independence Day, celebrated with joy in Black communities across the U.S. The Cal State University system is getting involved by hosting a virtual symposium to honor this important day. If you’re in the area, you can also join a live watch party on June 11 in the Otter Student Union Ballroom. This event will focus on reflecting on history and justice, and there will be food, drinks, and creative activities for everyone to enjoy. You can register to attend online.

In Monterey County, the Monterey County Black Caucus (MCBC) is hosting its seventh annual Juneteenth celebration on June 13 at Laguna Grande Park in Seaside. Supported by both the City of Seaside and CSUMB, this event will bring together community members to celebrate. Da’ja Robinson, a local leader and community liaison, expressed her excitement: “Juneteenth feels liberating. It’s a proud moment to see all the planning come together.”

The celebration will feature numerous activities, including live performances and support from over 50 Black-owned businesses. A highlight includes recognizing community leaders as Mr. and Mrs. Juneteenth, who are honored for their contributions to civil rights. This year’s honorees are Mary Claypool, a trustee, and Greg Daniels Sr., known for mentoring youth and running a local business.

The event will also feature a lineup of musical talent. R&B singer Goapele will perform, celebrating 25 years since her iconic album “Closer.” Other acts include rapper Kamaiyah and the Curtis Family C-Notes, ensuring there’s something for everyone.

A special Kids Zone will offer family-friendly activities like face painting and jump houses. Robinson highlights how important this area is for families: “It’s huge, with plenty of fun activities to keep the kids entertained.”

Despite being a relatively new federal holiday, Juneteenth blends history, culture, and celebration seamlessly. It acts as a reminder of both struggles and triumphs and promises to foster community togetherness for years to come.
