University of Hawai’i women’s basketball coach Khalilah Mitchell has exciting news for the 2026-27 season. Two new assistant coaches, Chris Straker and Mi’Cole Cayton, will be joining the Rainbow Wahine program, alongside returning coach Derrick Florence.
Chris Straker comes to UH after a season at Kennesaw State. With nearly 20 years in coaching, Straker has experience at NCAA Division I and international levels, including time at San Diego State and Georgia Southern. Originally from Manchester, England, he worked with Mitchell at San Jose State during the 2022-23 season. Known for developing guards, Straker has coached players who moved on to the WNBA. His time in the UK includes leading Leeds Beckett University to a national championship and coaching youth national teams.
Mitchell expressed confidence in Straker, saying, “We’ve worked together before, and his skills and ability to connect with players are exactly what we need.”
Mi’Cole Cayton is another dynamic addition. She was the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Texas Southern and has won the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Thirty Under 30 award, recognizing young coaches who excel in mentorship and leadership. Cayton’s journey as a student-athlete included overcoming significant injuries and undergoing multiple surgeries. Academically, she’s impressive, holding a law degree and several master’s degrees.
In addition to her coaching role, Cayton will lead the program’s NIL strategy in the mainland U.S. This new initiative aims to maximize earning opportunities for student-athletes.
“Mi’Cole’s energy is contagious,” Mitchell said. “Her experience as a player gives her a unique understanding that resonates with our athletes. She identifies what needs to be done and takes action, which is essential for our program.”
Returning to the staff is Derrick Florence, entering his sixth season with a strong track record. Under his guidance, the team has been among the nation’s elite defensive squads, finishing fifth in NCAA Division I for field-goal percentage defense last season.
Mitchell highlighted Florence’s impact: “His ability to mold our players into a top defensive unit is remarkable. Derrick is truly vital to Rainbow Wahine basketball.”
Exciting times are ahead for the Rainbow Wahine with these new hires. Strengthening their coaching staff will undoubtedly enhance the team’s strategy and player development in the upcoming season.
