Nashville, Tenn. (June 2, 2026) – The Nashville Predators have a new leader in hockey operations. Bill Haslam, the team’s Chairman and Majority Owner, announced that Chris MacFarland will step in as President of Hockey Operations and General Manager. He takes over from Barry Trotz, who will now serve in an advisory capacity after deciding to retire.
Haslam expressed enthusiasm about MacFarland’s appointment, calling him a “perfect fit” for the organization. “We conducted an exhaustive search,” Haslam said. “Chris really stood out.”
MacFarland, 56, previously spent 11 seasons with the Colorado Avalanche, including four years as their GM. Under his leadership, the Avalanche won the 2022 Stanley Cup and reached the playoffs for nine consecutive seasons. Last season, Colorado won the Presidents’ Trophy, marking them as the best team in the league with a franchise-record 121 points.
“I’m excited to be here,” MacFarland said. “Nashville has a proud tradition, and my goal is to build a team that competes for the Stanley Cup.”
He has a history as a successful team builder. While in Colorado, he helped shape a roster that included stars like Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar. In fact, during the 2025-26 season, 15 different players on the Avalanche recorded 20 points or more, showcasing the depth MacFarland prioritized.
Sean Henry, CEO of the Predators, also praised MacFarland’s experience, saying his background positions them well for future success. “Chris is celebrated across the NHL and has proven he can build winning teams,” he noted.
MacFarland isn’t new to building teams. Before Colorado, he spent 16 years with the Columbus Blue Jackets, where he rose through the ranks from manager to assistant GM. He holds a business degree from Pace University and even attended law school there.
The transition from Trotz to MacFarland signifies a new era for the Predators. Trotz, a key figure in the franchise’s history, developed a strong prospect pool and left the organization in a solid position. The Predators have 33 picks over the next three NHL Drafts, giving MacFarland ample opportunity to mold the team.
As he settles into his role, MacFarland is gearing up for critical upcoming events, such as the NHL Scouting Combine and the draft. The future looks promising for the Predators, and with MacFarland at the helm, fans can expect an exciting development phase ahead.
