India is making impressive strides in solar energy. As of January 31, 2025, the country has reached over 100 GW of installed solar capacity. This achievement is a significant milestone toward India’s ambitious goal of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy by 2030.
Currently, 84.10 GW of solar projects are still being developed, and another 47.49 GW are in the bidding process. Moreover, hybrid renewable energy projects are advancing rapidly, with 64.67 GW also under implementation or tendering. All these efforts combine for a remarkable total of 296.59 GW dedicated to solar and hybrid energy initiatives.
Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, praised this progress. He expressed pride in the achievements under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, highlighting the impact of initiatives like solar parks and rooftop solar systems. Thanks to these efforts, India has greatly increased its solar energy capacity over the last decade—from a modest 2.82 GW in 2014 to an impressive 100 GW in 2025.
Solar energy now constitutes 47% of India’s total renewable energy capacity. In 2024 alone, the country added a record 24.5 GW of solar power, which is more than double what was added in 2023. The utility-scale solar sector took off, with 18.5 GW installed in 2024, nearly tripling from the previous year. States such as Rajasthan, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh are leading contributors to this increase.
India is also stepping up its solar manufacturing. The production capacity for solar modules skyrocketed from just 2 GW in 2014 to 60 GW by the end of 2024. With ongoing government support, it aims to reach 100 GW of module production capacity by 2030.
