Painesville, OH – The Wheeling University Baseball team recently faced off against Lake Erie in a weekend series. After a thrilling come-from-behind victory on Saturday, the Cardinals played two more games on Sunday, ultimately going 1-2 over the weekend.
Game One: Lake Erie 6, Wheeling 4
The first game was a seven-inning match. Wheeling’s pitcher, Jaden Wilcox, started strong. However, Lake Erie quickly found their rhythm, scoring four runs in the first inning. Despite the shaky start, Wilcox settled in and kept Lake Erie off the board for three straight innings. But in the fifth, they managed to score two more runs, pushing their lead to 6-0, leading to Wilcox’s exit after 4.2 innings pitched.
Wheeling fought back in the sixth. They loaded the bases with a hit batter and two walks. Nic Ancelet stepped up with an RBI groundout, scoring Steven Merkel. Then, thanks to a Lake Erie error, Chris Sauer and Brett Johnson brought in two more runs, cutting the deficit to 6-3. Despite a spirited effort, Wheeling couldn’t equalize and ended up losing the game 6-4. Brett Johnson led his team offensively, going 1-3 with an RBI.
Game Two: Lake Erie 8, Wheeling 1
In the second game, Wheeling sent their ace, Kody McCarley, to the mound. He delivered a strong first few innings, retiring the side in order right off the bat. However, Lake Erie took charge in the fourth inning, scoring two runs. McCarley managed to keep the game within reach for a while but was ultimately charged with allowing three runs over six innings.
Lake Erie’s pitcher, Dominic Poltrone, was on fire and held Wheeling to just one hit until the sixth inning. In the eighth, the Cardinals finally scored, thanks to an RBI single from Brett Johnson. However, three runs from Lake Erie in the bottom half of the inning sealed Wheeling’s fate, leading to an 8-1 loss.
Brett Johnson was again the standout for Wheeling, finishing 1-4 with the team’s only RBI in both games. Jalen Raysor also had a solid game, going 1-1, while Steven Merkel and Michael Norton each contributed hits as well.
The Wheeling University Baseball team is set to take the field again on March 15th when they open their Mountain East Conference schedule against the University of Charleston. They will be looking to turn things around and find their rhythm in conference play.
