Trump claims Iran has agreed to refrain from pursuing nuclear weapons

President Donald Trump stated in a recent interview that the Iranian regime has agreed not to pursue nuclear weapons, although he acknowledged the possibility of them changing their stance. The remarks were made during an appearance on the New York Post’s “Pod Force One” podcast.

In the interview, Trump emphasized the importance of addressing Iran’s nuclear capabilities amidst the ongoing conflict, stating, “I did have to say we have to do something about Iran… they can’t let them have a nuclear weapon.” He confirmed Iran’s agreement, expressing confidence in the regime’s commitment.

When asked about the specifics of this agreement, Trump remarked, “Oh yeah, they’ve agreed to that,” but also noted, “now they can change their mind.” The Iranian foreign ministry did not respond to requests for comment from CNBC regarding Trump’s claims.

The conflict between the U.S. and Iran is nearing the 100-day mark, with current negotiations reaching a standstill. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has indicated that discussions are ongoing, despite Iranian state media reporting a halt in communication. This inconsistency has characterized the negotiations between the two nations.

Following Trump’s interview, oil prices continued to rise, while U.S. stock futures showed mixed results. Oil prices have remained elevated during the conflict, particularly as the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping lane, has faced closures.

On Monday, Iran’s state-affiliated news agency reported that Tehran plans to fully close the Strait of Hormuz in response to alleged ceasefire violations. When asked about the likelihood of the blockade continuing into Labor Day, Trump remarked, “I think it could be, but I think it’s unlikely,” expressing optimism about a rapid resolution to the situation.
