FICCI and Lilly Introduce Bharat Life Sciences Awards to Honor Indian Scientists

The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) announced the launch of the ‘Bharat Life Sciences Awards’ in collaboration with Eli Lilly and Company (India). The awards aim to recognize excellence in life sciences research, capability, and public health impact in India.

This initiative is supported by the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India and the Department of Pharmaceuticals (DoP), alongside the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) and Invest India. It aims to create a platform that unites innovators, researchers, and institutions in the life sciences sector.

The inaugural ceremony for the Bharat Life Sciences Awards will take place on 1st October 2026. The awards will be governed by an advisory council and evaluated by an independent jury composed of experts in life sciences, innovation, and public health. Grant Thornton Bharat will act as the Process Advisor to ensure transparency and integrity throughout the selection process.

The awards are intended to honor contributions from various sectors, including academia, public research institutions, and industry innovators, emphasizing the importance of discovery and public health outcomes. The initiative draws from India’s rich scientific legacy, as seen in historical centers of learning like Takshashila and Nalanda, and significant texts such as the Sushruta Samhita and Charaka Samhita.

Dr. Jitendra Kumar, Managing Director of BIRAC, highlighted the importance of recognizing excellence in the biotechnology ecosystem and the role such platforms play in public health solutions. Jyoti Vij, Director General of FICCI, mentioned that the awards would create a credible national platform to honor individuals and institutions contributing to healthcare innovation.

Winselow Tucker, President and General Manager of Eli Lilly and Company (India), noted that India’s life sciences ecosystem is progressing toward greater scientific maturity, moving from manufacturing to innovation. He expressed support for the Bharat Life Sciences Awards as a means to acknowledge the efforts of researchers and institutions in enhancing public health.
