Google has invited third-party companies to develop accessories for the Fitbit Air, including a variety of bands and straps. The device’s pod, known as the Fitbit Pebble, can now be customized by external manufacturers.
According to Google, the initiative aims to enhance the array of options available for consumers, similar to accessory offerings from other technology companies. Google has released specifications and guidelines for manufacturers to follow.
Google’s guidelines are organized into five sections:
- General advice on designing wearable bands.
- Branding restrictions to align with Google’s standards.
- A link to the actual CAD drawings.
- A list of technical requirements, including sensor accessibility and retention thresholds.
- Material guidelines, ensuring products are lead-free and free from PFAS.
The CAD drawings will provide relevant dimensions of the pod, helping manufacturers create compatible accessories. However, it has been noted that the actual CAD files were not included, only a PDF with three pages of specifications.
In addition to technical details, Google has designated some information as confidential, which remains included in the shared PDF.
This move may lead to more affordable accessory options for users, including potential bicep bands. The increased flexibility could also foster innovations, such as multi-functional straps that support multiple devices.
