Join the Movement: Student and Faculty Rally Launches Lawmakers’ Forum on Crucial SSU Funding Cuts

Students, staff, and faculty came together for a rally at Seawolf Plaza, just before a crucial meeting at Sonoma State University. They were there to voice their support for the university and the programs at risk of cuts. Signs like “Rohnert Park loves SSU,” “Save SSU Geology,” and “Philosophy matters” filled the plaza. Some attendees even criticized Interim President Emily Cutrer, who has been a prominent figure during these challenging times, with slogans like “She doesn’t even go here.”

The upcoming meeting, scheduled for Friday afternoon, aims to address the $24 million budget deficit at Sonoma State. Lawmakers, including state Sen. Christopher Cabaldon and Assemblymember Damon Connolly, will lead discussions on potential cuts and future steps. Key figures from SSU leadership and the California State University Chancellor’s Office are also expected to participate.

Vanessa Mendoza, a junior studying political science, expressed her hope that the administration would take responsibility during the forum. “I’ll be here the whole time,” she said, showing her commitment to understanding what’s next for the university.

Senator McGuire emphasized the need for a clear plan from Sonoma State within 60 days. This plan should focus on attracting students and improving the university’s identity, especially in light of recent decisions that led to layoffs and program closures. “Failure is not an option,” he stated firmly.

Much of the budget shortfall is linked to cuts in state funding, as highlighted in Governor Gavin Newsom’s January budget proposal. While McGuire and other legislators commit to supporting funding for CSU, he noted that further assistance for Sonoma State depends on a strong plan moving forward.

The legislative forum is set to run from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., with attendees eager to hear solutions. As one speaker exclaimed, “At two o’clock, we would like to see a plan!” There’s a growing sense of urgency among those present; the stakes for the university’s future are high.
