LOS ANGELES — At the NAACP Image Awards, former Vice President Kamala Harris took the stage with an important message. She praised the civil rights organization as a cornerstone of the Black community and urged everyone to remain strong and have faith during challenging times.
“While we face tough times, the story of America will not just be written by those in power. It will be written by all of us—by we the people,” Harris said after receiving the NAACP’s Chairman’s Award.
The event took place at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium for the 56th year in a row. Harris, who previously served as a U.S. senator and California’s attorney general, was the first woman and the first person of color to hold the vice presidency.
In her speech, Harris focused on the need for vigilance and the fight for truth as she discussed the future of America. “When times get tough, we know what to do,” she said. “We organize, we mobilize, we educate, and we advocate. Our strength comes from taking on challenges.”
During the ceremony, the Wayans family was honored for their significant impact on comedy and entertainment. Keenen Ivory Wayans, Damon Wayans Sr., Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Kim Wayans, and Damon Wayans Jr. were all recognized for their contributions that have influenced Hollywood for over thirty years.
Marlon Wayans shared a humorous story about how his brother Keenen inspired their journey in comedy. “He raised us all like Jedis. We wouldn’t be here without him,” he joked, prompting laughter from the audience.
Keke Palmer was awarded Entertainer of the Year, and she expressed her surprise and gratitude. “I didn’t think I would win,” she admitted, acknowledging the talent of her fellow nominees. Palmer recently starred in the hit comedy “One of Them Days” and won an Emmy for her work on NBC’s “Password.”
Deon Cole, the host of the awards, also took a moment to remember the residents affected by the wildfires in January. He highlighted the resilience of the community, noting that many who had lost homes and livelihoods attended the event.
Finally, Dave Chappelle received the President’s Award for his impactful comedy. He emphasized the NAACP’s mission to combat negative representations of Black people in media, stating, “We continue to chip away at these stereotypes every chance we get.”
