Major Drone Attack Strikes Moscow and Surrounding Region: What You Need to Know

A drone attack in Moscow and the surrounding area has left one person dead and three injured, according to local officials. The attack happened overnight and was described as “massive.” Most of the casualties occurred in the towns of Vidnoye and Domodedovo, located just outside the city. Seven apartments in a residential building were also damaged.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported that 73 drones were intercepted before they could reach the city. One building sustained damage from falling debris.

As a result of the attack, train services in one district have been halted, and Moscow’s airports are enforcing flight restrictions. This assault is one of the largest since Russia began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

The timing of the attack is notable, as it occurred just before a crucial meeting in Saudi Arabia. This meeting involves representatives from the US and Ukraine, focusing on efforts to end the ongoing conflict with Russia.

Governor Andrei Vorobyev shared images on social media showing damage to the affected apartments and burned vehicles in a nearby parking lot. He noted that 12 people, including three children, were evacuated from their homes.

Flight restrictions have been put in place at Moscow’s major airports: Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, and Vnukovo, which together serve millions of passengers each year. Russia’s defense ministry reported that a total of 337 Ukrainian drones were either shot down or intercepted across Moscow and nine other regions.

On the other hand, Ukrainian officials reported Russian drone strikes in Kyiv and other areas overnight, although it is unclear if there were any casualties from those incidents.

Ukraine has yet to respond to this latest attack on Moscow.
