Recently, users of Chromecast (2nd gen) and Chromecast Audio have faced some frustrating issues. Many can no longer stream audio or video content.
Update 3/11: Google has announced they found the problem affecting these devices. They are working to fix it soon.
Important: Do not reset your device. If you already tried resetting it, you might struggle to set it up again. Google knows about this too and is on it.
They are sorry for the trouble and appreciate your patience.
Update 3/10: On Monday, Google acknowledged the issue with Chromecast (v2) and Chromecast Audio. They are actively seeking a solution.
Original 3/9: Many users are seeing a message stating, “Untrusted device: [name] couldn’t be verified.” This often appears in streaming apps like YouTube when they attempt to connect to their Chromecast.
There is no simple fix available, like restarting or resetting the devices. However, the screensaver features, such as Google Photos and weather display, still function properly.
Models like Chromecast (3rd gen) and Ultra are not affected by this issue.

This “Untrusted device” message has left many users worried that their devices are unusable or being phased out.
However, it seems this is just a bug. Google hasn’t announced plans to retire these devices yet. Those affected are still running firmware version 1.56.x.
Let’s hope Google can roll out a server-side fix quickly.
The Chromecast (2nd gen) and Chromecast Audio were both introduced in September 2015. They have served users well since then.
