The Cuyuna Range Food Shelf has made an exciting change. Starting in January 2024, they moved from giving out prepared boxes to letting people shop for their own food. This new self-serve model is set to launch in June 2024.
Thanks to help from SuperShelf Lead Consultants and many community volunteers, the transition is on track. The community has been very supportive, donating for new shelves, refrigerators, freezers, shopping carts, and even paint. Local youths have brightened up the space with cheerful murals and welcoming signs.
Additionally, the food shelf received a SHIP/Crow Wing Energized Partner Award. This award allowed them to enhance the environment with colorful signs that guide shoppers through the aisles. These improvements have made a big difference, creating a more inviting atmosphere focused on healthy food choices.
The community response has been overwhelmingly positive. Many people prefer shopping for themselves rather than receiving a pre-packed box. Even though they still offer boxes for emergencies, more visitors are choosing to shop. This shift aligns perfectly with the goal of providing healthy options and allowing people to select what they need. The food comes from generous donors like Super One, Target, Costco, Cub Foods, Salvation Army, Master Gardeners, Sprout, and Second Harvest, allowing the food shelf to present a diverse range of items.
The new organization of food by categories—like proteins, fruits, vegetables, and ready-to-eat meals—makes it easier for families to find what they need.
Experts note that self-service models in food pantries can reduce stigma and empower individuals by giving them choice. A recent study from Feeding America found that allowing choice can lead to increased satisfaction and less food waste.
