Janine Hall’s paintings at Headbones Gallery are more than just artwork; they’re a journey of personal interpretation. With a mix of portraits, landscapes, and distinctive symbols like ribbons and Tarot cards, her pieces invite viewers to engage and reflect.
The opening reception for her exhibition will be on Saturday, March 22, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the gallery on Old Kamloops Road. Here, visitors can explore Hall’s artistic world and discover what resonates with them.
Hall believes in the power of personal experience in art. “My paintings have symbolic meanings, but I want viewers to interpret them without any prior knowledge,” she shares. “I encourage individual stories and reactions, allowing the art to be a mirror for one’s own emotions and thoughts.”
This approach is evident in her portrait work, where she reimagines her subjects with fresh perspectives. Julie Oakes, the gallery owner, notes, “Janine’s still life pieces blend historical art with modern photographs and personal items, like her unique ribbons. This mix distorts our usual view of the physical world in a fascinating way.”
Additionally, Hall’s paintings of Tarot cards add another layer. The Major Arcana resonates differently depending on the viewer—some may see deep connections, while others enjoy the visual beauty. This duality creates a space for both the curious and the art aficionados.
Recent studies from art institutions indicate that viewers are increasingly drawn to art that offers personal connection, reflecting a broader trend in how we engage with creativity today. According to a survey by the National Endowment for the Arts, 72% of adults believe that art helps them express their emotions more clearly, underscoring the importance of personal narrative in art appreciation.
Janine Hall’s work will be on display until May 3. This exhibition not only showcases her talent but also invites a deeper conversation between the artwork and its audience.
