The Nagaland Assembly has recently formed two important committees. Their main goal is to address climate change and improve local governance in both rural and urban areas.
Speaker Sharingain Longkumer emphasized that these committees are essential in making governance more accessible to the people. He stated that the global perspective on these issues makes their establishment urgent.
The climate change committee will focus on reviewing and enhancing the state’s efforts to fight climate issues. It will look at proposed climate laws and how well the government is meeting its climate promises. This committee will also work on improving air and water quality, especially in major rivers. They will support initiatives such as green budgeting, promoting electric vehicles, and sustainable farming practices.
The second committee will focus on local governance through the Committee on Urban Local Bodies and Nagaland Village Councils. This group will tackle various local issues, including waste management, water access, housing for low-income families, traffic management, and pollution control in both cities and rural areas. They will also provide guidance to the government on urgent matters affecting local bodies.
Longkumer expressed his hope that the members of these newly formed committees would be dedicated to solving the region’s most pressing challenges.
Along with these committees, the Speaker introduced 14 additional financial and non-financial committees. These new bodies will further support the Assembly’s work for the coming years.
