Thrilling Non-Conference Showdown: Women’s Lacrosse Falls to Rockhurst – Wheeling University Athletics Recap

Wheeling, W.Va. – After a three-week break, the Wheeling University Women’s Lacrosse team took to the field again, facing Rockhurst. Unfortunately, the game was tough, and the Cardinals fell 23-4. Despite the loss, there were standout performances by several players.

Trinity Rose led the team with two goals, bringing her total to four points for the day. Her first goal came during a free position opportunity, scoring at 10:19 in the first quarter. This brought the score to 6-2 early in the game. Rose’s second goal occurred in the last five minutes after causing a turnover that set up another free position. She tied for the team lead with one caused turnover while also standing out defensively with three draw controls and four groundballs.

Jovie Noack also impressed, scoring one goal and contributing to the team’s defense. After Rockhurst scored five quick goals, it was Noack who capitalized on a missed shot, swooping in for a goal that put Wheeling on the board at 5-1. This marked her 13th goal of the season.

The final goal came from Sophia Cirone, who scored in the last two and a half minutes. After Rockhurst’s attempt to clear the ball failed, Cirone seized the opportunity, scoring to finalize the match at 23-4. Cirone, alongside Rose, led the team with two points for the game, contributing one assist.

In goal, the Cardinals split time between two players. Maisy Latus started and made eight saves. Giavonna Perkins, making her season debut, played for 30 minutes and secured six saves. Together, they made 14 saves out of 23 shots, achieving a combined save percentage of 60.9%.

Wheeling was efficient with their opportunities, taking 15 shots and landing eight on goal. The team’s performance improved over the game, especially in the fourth quarter when they managed to put four of their six shots on net. Defensively, they were able to pick up six draw controls but struggled with clears, achieving a 9-20 success rate.

As the team prepares for their next matchup against Indiana University of Pennsylvania on March 19 at 4 PM, they’ll be looking to build on the positives from this game. With strong individual performances, they have the potential to turn things around in their upcoming conference battles.
