Urgent Alert: CS Tuya Warns of Climate Change as a Growing Threat to Kenya’s National Security

Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya recently emphasized that climate change poses a serious threat to Kenya’s environment, economy, and national security. She urged collective action, particularly through tree planting, to combat this challenge.

At an event in Machakos County, CS Tuya led her team in planting 15,000 trees on land designated for the Kenya Air Force (KAF) within Konza Technopolis. To date, KAF has successfully planted a total of 35,000 trees on this 17-acre site.

“The simple act of planting trees is a powerful commitment to fighting climate change,” Tuya remarked, highlighting the importance of this initiative. Her ministry has been tasked with growing 800 million seedlings and planting 500 million trees as part of a national campaign aimed at addressing climate change over the next decade.

Since the launch of this tree-planting initiative, over 60 million trees have been planted across the country. This program is a key part of President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza strategy, which focuses on climate action and improving livelihoods. Tuya pointed out that success requires involvement from all sectors of society and the government.

She also acknowledged the vital contributions from partners like the Kenya Forest Service and the Kenya Forestry Research Institute, which provide technical support. Meanwhile, she encouraged Kenyans to utilize the rainy season to boost tree planting efforts.

Experts agree that such initiatives are crucial. According to a recent report by the World Resources Institute, forests play a significant role in mitigating climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide.
