Sleep Health®: Celebrating 10 Years of Sleep Research

The National Sleep Foundation (NSF) is excited to mark the 10th anniversary of its journal, Sleep Health. This journal has been crucial in exploring how sleep impacts our health and well-being. Launched back in 2016, it even won the PROSE Award for Best New Journal in Science, Technology, and Medicine from the Association of American Publishers.
Sleep Health is a place for peer-reviewed research that focuses on improving sleep for everyone, regardless of age or background. It dives deep into the complex connections between sleep and various health concerns, such as cognitive decline, immune function, and mental health. This vital work has helped inform global initiatives aimed at achieving sleep health equity.
Throughout its ten years, the journal has taken an interdisciplinary approach. It has helped researchers, public health advocates, and clinicians gain essential insights into sleep health. This breadth of knowledge is increasingly relevant as sleep issues continue to rise globally.
John Lopos, CEO of the National Sleep Foundation, shared, “The journal’s anniversary marks a significant milestone. Sleep Health has broadened our understanding of sleep’s role in overall health.” He credits many contributors for this success.
Orfeu Buxton, the journal’s Editor-in-Chief, also highlighted the journal’s commitment: “As I return to my roles as an author and reader, I am excited to see what the future holds. We will continue to advocate for sleep as a foundational element of health.” This dedication reflects wider trends in health research, emphasizing how crucial good sleep is for physical and mental health.
Recent studies highlight that lack of sleep can lead to significant health issues. For instance, a study published in the journal Sleep found that sleep deprivation can increase the risk of chronic diseases, including diabetes and heart disease. These findings align with NSF’s mission to promote better sleep health.
