Since 2021, the University of Utah has made significant strides in West Valley City. They’ve embarked on a project that redefines the relationship between universities and communities. This collaboration isn’t just about outreach; it’s been shaped by the voices of local residents and leaders. Together, they’re tackling crucial issues in health, education, and job opportunities.

A recent milestone is a remarkable $75 million donation from the Eccles Foundation. This funding is pivotal for the new health campus and hospital, set to break ground soon. It will drive further initiatives across different university departments, enhancing the project’s overall impact.

Working alongside the community, the university pinpointed seven focus areas where they can truly make a difference:

President Taylor Randall highlights the region’s potential: “West Valley is where the American Dream lives,” he says, with its mix of cultures and entrepreneurial spirit. However, the area also faces obstacles, like inadequate health outcomes and limited job prospects. These challenges underline why West Valley is the perfect location for the university’s inaugural societal impact initiative.

The new health campus is just one piece of a broader vision. Partnering with a rich resource pool, the University of Utah is uniquely positioned to tackle interconnected community issues. Randall notes the extensive community engagement: “We’ve dedicated countless hours to connecting with local residents.” This collaborative spirit aims to deliver healthcare solutions that also address social issues. For example, community health workers could provide support for both health and legal challenges, helping residents with issues like housing instability.

Through active community discussions, the University has discovered significant hurdles that prevent residents from accessing higher education. Many struggle to juggle family commitments and work, making traditional class schedules difficult. To help, they’ve designed flexible educational programs that offer:

• Certifications in healthcare that lead to immediate job opportunities
• Flexible scheduling for working students
• Robust financial aid to support completion of programs

Thanks to initiatives like Proxima Careers, a B-corporation powered by the University, graduates are already finding jobs in the healthcare sector.

Looking ahead, the West Valley project is expected to generate around 2,000 new jobs. But the economic strategy goes beyond just numbers. The university is exploring community investment models to help residents build wealth. In a decade, they envision thousands of community members employed in healthcare, enhanced health outcomes, and improved education levels and household incomes.

Additionally, this initiative has sparked a cultural shift within the university by breaking down barriers between health services and education. “Seeing collaboration between our health and educational teams is where the real innovation happens,” says Randall. “It’s creativity and impact at its best.”
