Stakeholders are stepping up to advocate for climate-friendly policies and thorough environmental assessments, emphasizing their crucial role in sustainable development. This buzz was palpable at the recent inauguration of new executives for the Nigerian Institution of Environmental Engineers in Lagos, held under the theme "Driving climate-friendly clean energy for sustainable economic growth."

Azeez Agoro, the chairman of the Lagos chapter, shared insights on how engineering can tackle the major challenges our planet faces today. He highlighted pressing issues like climate change, pollution, and waste management that demand urgent solutions. Agoro stated, “Environmental engineering practices have never been more critical,” underlining the importance of innovative strategies to improve our quality of life.

With Lagos being a bustling city of over 20 million people, he stressed the need for effective, sustainable solutions. "We need to lead the charge in protecting our environment for both current and future generations," he noted. It’s crucial for all parties—government, industry, and local communities—to join forces for successful environmental protection.

Yusuf Majolagbe, a former president of NIEE, called for urgent measures to combat climate change in Nigeria. He emphasized the importance of strong partnerships between the public and private sectors to transition towards a more eco-friendly environment. He mentioned the Lagos state government’s exploration of alternative fuel sources, like biogas derived from waste materials. This step not only addresses waste management but also helps reduce global warming and flooding risks.

According to recent data from the World Bank, Nigeria produces around 320 million tons of waste annually, much of which goes untreated. By embracing the concept of a circular economy, we can transform waste into resources, minimizing environmental harm while benefiting communities.

As society grows increasingly aware of climate issues, discussions like those during the NIEE event are more vital than ever.
