Kashmir: The Heart of Pakistan’s Identity – Insights from Army Chief General Asim Munir

New Delhi: Recently, India firmly rejected Pakistan’s latest comments about Kashmir during a United Nations security council discussion. In response, Pakistan’s Army Chief General Asim Munir called Kashmir the “jugular vein” of Pakistan.

Munir stated, “Our position on Kashmir is clear. It is our lifeblood. We will not abandon our Kashmiri brothers. They are valiantly fighting against Indian control.” He insisted that no force could sever Kashmir from Pakistan.

Addressing the “two-nation theory,” Munir emphasized the distinct cultural and religious differences between Pakistanis and Indians. He said, “We are two nations. It’s crucial to teach your children our history so they never forget. Our religion, customs, and thoughts set us apart. This division was the driving force behind the creation of Pakistan.” In the recent UN debate, India’s envoy, Parvathaneni Harish, dismissed Pakistan’s claims as unjustified and insisted that Jammu and Kashmir is an inseparable part of India.

In a bid to encourage support from Pakistanis abroad, Munir appreciated the emotional bond they have with the country. He described them as “ambassadors” and urged them to invest in Pakistan. “Your contributions shine a light on our nation across the globe. You’re a testament to our culture,” he said.

On the topic of Balochistan, Munir addressed local insurgencies, insisting that terrorism would not dictate the future of Pakistan. He challenged the notion that local terrorist groups could intimidate the army, stating, “If 1.3 million Indian soldiers can’t shake us, can a few terrorists?” He mentioned groups like the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and expressed confidence in the army’s ability to overcome them.

The Kashmir issue often resurfaces in Munir’s speeches as a way to rally nationalistic support for the military, which has been facing challenges in public opinion. This connection is crucial, considering a 2023 survey indicated a significant decline in trust towards military leadership among the Pakistani populace.
