VSU Student Shines with Prestigious College of Nursing and Health Sciences Excellence Award

Mallory Alison Bennett from Valdosta, Georgia, has achieved a remarkable feat by receiving the Spring 2025 President’s Award for Academic Excellence at Valdosta State University (VSU). This honor is given to exceptional graduating students from each college at VSU, celebrating their hard work and dedication.

Bennett, set to graduate magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, will be honored during the university’s 239^th Commencement on May 10. Reflecting on her journey, she expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to study in such a fulfilling field. “It’s hard to describe what this means to me,” she said. “Education and personal growth have always been my focus, so it feels amazing to be recognized for my efforts.”

During her time at VSU, Bennett honed her nursing skills at the STEP (Simulated Training Encounters with Patients) Center and volunteered to care for underserved communities. Additionally, she gained vital hands-on experience as a nurse extern at SGMC Health in Valdosta. Her dedication earned her the status of Zell Miller Scholar and a place on the Dean’s List multiple times.

After graduation, Bennett plans to work in the cardiac intensive care unit at SGMC Health. She is deeply passionate about this area and aims to grow her clinical skills in a high-impact environment. “I am eager to start my career here,” she remarked, “and in the next few years, I hope to advance my education further, potentially becoming a certified registered nurse anesthetist or a medical doctor.” This commitment to continual learning reflects a growing trend among nurses seeking advanced roles in healthcare.

A recent report by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) stated that the demand for advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) is on the rise due to increasing healthcare needs. This aligns with Bennett’s aspirations, showcasing a common pathway for nursing graduates today. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 45% job growth for nurse anesthetists, nurse midwives, and nurse practitioners from 2020 to 2030, much faster than the average for all occupations.

On a personal note, Bennett values the support of her family, including her mother, Paula Bennett-Rogers, and her partner, Tyler Ferrell, as they encourage her ambitions. Alongside them are her beloved cats, Sable, Graham, and Marshmallow, who bring joy to her life. Bennett exemplifies the spirit of dedication and passion that VSU fosters among its students.
