NASA’s SPHEREx Space Telescope Launches: Discover How It’s Mapping the Entire Sky!

When SPHEREx snaps a photo of the sky, it captures light using six detectors, each picking up different wavelengths. This process creates a set of images called an exposure. Remarkably, SPHEREx takes about 600 exposures each day. After each exposure, the whole observatory shifts position. Unlike many telescopes that have moving parts, SPHEREx stays stable by using spinning wheels inside the spacecraft to control its direction.

Within two years, SPHEREx will compile hundreds of thousands of these images to create four all-sky maps. This mapping is significant; it will shed light on the moments right after the Big Bang. This event, known as cosmic inflation, saw the universe expand exponentially—by a trillion-trillionfold—almost instantly.

“We’re diving into the tiniest details of the universe’s beginnings while observing its vastness today,” says Jim Fanson, project manager at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. It’s a fascinating concept, perfectly blending poetry and science.

Cosmic inflation has left its mark on the universe, subtly influencing how matter is distributed. This means the placement of galaxies holds clues about the ancient universe, which once was smaller than an atom. Understanding cosmic inflation requires deciphering how such immense energy could have sparked the universe’s creation.

Jamie’s Bock, the mission’s principal investigator at Caltech and JPL, shares, “We’ve worked towards this goal for 12 years. The instrument’s performance is stellar, likely leading us to amazing discoveries.”

SPHEREx isn’t just about mapping; it’s also contributing to a greater understanding of the cosmos. Its findings could change our grasp of the universe’s origins and evolution. Recent studies show that similar missions have transformed our understanding of space. For instance, the Hubble Space Telescope has provided insights into galaxy formation and dark matter, reshaping our knowledge significantly.
