New Study Reveals AI’s Overconfidence and Bias: What It Means for Human-AI Interaction

New research reveals that artificial intelligence (AI) can sometimes think as irrationally as humans do. A recent study published on April 8 in the journal Manufacturing & Service Operations Management found that ChatGPT displays a range of common human decision-making biases in about half the scenarios tested.

Researchers from Canadian and Australian universities examined OpenAI’s GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 models. They found that, while these models are consistent in their reasoning, they share some of the same flaws as human decision-makers. This shows that AI can mimic irrational behaviors, such as risk aversion and overconfidence.

According to Yang Chen, assistant professor of operations management at the Ivey Business School, “Managers should use these tools for clear, formulaic problems.” He notes that subjective decisions require more caution. The study applied classic human biases to prompts given to ChatGPT to see how it would respond.

The researchers asked the AI hypothetical questions related to traditional psychology and real-world business scenarios, such as inventory management and supplier negotiations. They wanted to determine if AI would mimic human biases across different contexts.

Interestingly, GPT-4 performed better than GPT-3.5 when it came to problems with mathematical solutions, making fewer errors in logic. However, in scenarios involving risk, the AI often reflected human tendencies toward less rational choices. It even showed a strong preference for certainty, sometimes more than humans do.

The consistency of biases across different types of questions indicates a deeper issue: these traits aren’t random—they reveal a way the AI reasons. For example, when faced with questions that illustrate confirmation bias, GPT-4 consistently gave biased answers, highlighting a concerning pattern.

However, it wasn’t all bad news. ChatGPT managed to avoid some human pitfalls, like base-rate neglect and the sunk-cost fallacy. These findings suggest that while AI can imitate human flaws, it can also sidestep certain biases that humans struggle with.

This behavior comes from the AI’s training data, which reflects the cognitive biases inherent in human decision-making. According to the authors, AI’s tendencies are strengthened by human feedback that often favors compelling but not necessarily rational responses. In ambiguous tasks, the AI leans even more into human-like reasoning.

For practical applications, Chen advises using GPT for clear numerical tasks, much like trusting a calculator. But for strategic decisions, human intervention remains vital to mitigate known biases. “AI should be treated like an employee making significant decisions; it requires oversight and ethical guidelines,” cautioned Meena Andiappan, an associate professor at McMaster University. “If we don’t, we risk automating flawed thinking rather than improving it.”

In conclusion, while AI offers impressive capabilities, it is not infallible. Understanding its similarities to human thought is crucial, especially in areas where judgment plays a significant role.
