A small plane crashed into a residential area of Simi Valley on Saturday afternoon, tragically claiming the lives of two people and a dog. This incident also caused significant damage to two homes.
The plane, identified as a Vans RV-10, is a kit-built, four-seat aircraft. It took off from William J. Fox Airfield in Lancaster, headed for Camarillo Airport when the crash occurred. Authorities confirmed that the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating the matter.
The crash happened around 2 p.m. on High Meadow Street in the Wood Ranch area. Witnesses reported seeing the plane flying lower and lower before it crashed. One resident, Arman Hovakemian, was doing yard work when he noticed the aircraft’s alarming descent. Concerned it might hit his home, he quickly grabbed his wife and their Pomeranian, Koko. Moments later, there was a loud bang as the plane crashed in their yard.
Hovakemian shared his shock, stating, “I’m overwhelmed. I’m numb. It hasn’t sunk in yet. We’re fortunate we were able to get out.” Meanwhile, the smell of gas filled the air as a fire ignited in their home, prompting neighbors to call for help.
The second home affected belonged to P.J. Van Kralingen and his wife, Iris. They were away at the Getty Center when they learned of the crash. Thankfully, two of their three dogs managed to escape, although they are still missing. Van Kralingen expressed gratitude that no one was home at the time, as windows in their family room were shattered.
Residents noted the plane’s erratic behavior just before the crash. Security footage captured the aircraft circling the neighborhood for almost three minutes, flying perilously close to homes. Experts highlight that this type of behavior raises questions about potential pilot error or mechanical failure.
The NTSB is currently on-site assessing the wreckage. Investigations like this can take a long time, often ranging from 12 to 18 months. In the meantime, local authorities reinforce the importance of aviation safety, with statistics showing that small aircraft incidents, while rare, can have dire consequences.
This crash serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with flying, even in seemingly routine flights. Community members are rallying around those affected, emphasizing the need for support in times of crisis.
