The box office has turned a corner in a big way!

Warner Bros.’ A Minecraft Movie has made waves with a record-setting opening. The film raked in a staggering $163 million in the U.S. and $150.7 million internationally, totaling $313.2 million globally. This impressive figure surpassed early estimates, showcasing a significant uptick from previous projections.
This launch marks the highest ever for a video game film, outpacing The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which opened to $146.4 million last Easter weekend. While Mario opened on a Wednesday, its total of $204 million by Easter Sunday was noteworthy, but A Minecraft Movie has clearly taken the lead in 2025, making it the largest domestic launch since Deadpool & Wolverine in July 2024, which earned $211 million.
Having such a successful start is especially timely for Warner Bros., which has faced challenges at the box office in recent weeks. Movies like Disney’s Snow White have struggled, making A Minecraft Movie a much-needed boost for Hollywood.
This victory is also significant for Warner Bros. executives Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy, along with Legendary chief Mary Parent, who has a knack for managing blockbuster films. They all played key roles in bringing this project to life. The film is directed by Jared Hess, known for his work on Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre.
In the movie, stars like Jason Momoa and Jack Black bring to life the story of four misfits thrust into the vibrant, cubic world of Minecraft. Their mission? To navigate this new reality and find a way back home with the help of an unexpected ally—Steve, voiced by Black.
Jeff Goldstein, head of global distribution at Warner Bros., noted that the film appealed to audiences in various locations, from major cities to small towns. Parent emphasized that Minecraft is a global sensation, and the film captures its essence in a joyful manner. With over 300 million copies sold, Minecraft is the best-selling video game ever and boasts around 125 million active daily players. Microsoft acquired Mojang, the game’s developer, in 2014, further cementing Minecraft’s influence in the gaming world.
Despite mixed reviews, A Minecraft Movie managed to connect with younger viewers. Audience demographics revealed that teens aged 13 to 17 made up 35% of ticket sales, while adults aged 18 to 24 were the largest group. Families also turned out, with a higher percentage of male viewers.
Internationally, the movie showed promise in China, topping the weekend box office there with $14.6 million, marking a successful debut for any Hollywood film this year.
Goldstein called the opening “lightning in a bottle,” emphasizing the film’s unexpected success. In comparison, the second film at the box office, A Working Man, earned $7.3 million, far behind A Minecraft Movie.
