This initiative, organized by the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC), has made a significant impact since it started, gathering around 2 billion pounds of food to help those facing food insecurity.
Aaron Mills from the NALC emphasizes how easy it is for residents to contribute. Simply place non-perishable food items in a bag and leave it by your mailbox for your letter carrier to pick up. The post office handles the rest.
During the summer, local food banks often see a dip in donations. Mills highlights that protein-rich foods like canned beans, meat, and peanut butter are especially needed. “We plan the drive for this time of year because resources tend to run low,” he explains.
The NALC partners with the Food Bank for Central & Northeast Missouri for this event. Their collaboration has resulted in impressive donation totals, making the food bank one of the most effective participants nationwide. Mills is proud of the community’s generosity, noting, “Our local post office isn’t far behind major cities like Los Angeles or Phoenix in terms of donations. This shows how caring people in mid-Missouri are.”
