On May 9, the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) will celebrate its graduates at a ceremony at Baxter Arena in Omaha. Over a thousand students will walk across the stage, marking a big milestone in their lives.
Two special alumni will also be honored. Dr. James Armitage, a graduate and long-time faculty member at UNMC, will receive the J.G. Elliott Award. This award recognizes those who significantly impact medicine in Nebraska. Dr. Armitage is known for developing a world-class bone marrow transplant program and is a leader in lymphoma research. His dedication has changed the lives of many patients, earning him deep respect within the community.
Dr. James Roudebush will receive an honorary Doctor of Science degree. As the 19th Surgeon General of the U.S. Air Force, he guided thousands of medical personnel and provided care as a family physician and flight surgeon. His unique role combines military expertise with hands-on patient care, highlighting his commitment to health and service.
The J.G. Elliott Award honors Jack Elliott, who was a member of the University of Nebraska Board of Regents for two decades.
In addition to the Omaha ceremony, UNMC will hold other commencement events on May 7 in Lincoln, Norfolk, and Kearney, showcasing the achievements of students across the state.
